I have been practicing Coast Salish art for a number of years, studing under my grandmother, Jane Marston and my aunt, Angela Marston. This piece, The Salmon People, was created as part of a school assignment. The assigment was to create a page in a coloring book that our class would be producing. Through a number of sketches and concepts this is the piece that I created. This piece has now not only been printed in the coloring book and displayed in the VIU art gallery but it is also going to be used as the logo for next years Ethnobiology Conference.
The Salmon People colouring page was inspired by Stuart Pagaduan’s telling of a Creation Story. This piece uses traditional Coast Salish form line taught to me by my grandmother, Jane Marston, and aunt, Angela Marston. This design represents my connection to the island by bring together my family history, Coast Salish culture, and the stories of this island.
